The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is one of those books that forever changed my outlook on life! It is small and simple, and you could probably read it in an afternoon if you wanted to, but it is chock full of life-changing, paradox shattering wisdom.

According to Don Miguel, every single person is living in their own sort of ‘dream’ that we perceive as reality. The reality that we perceive is based upon the beliefs that we hold as individuals. We can choose to live in a beautiful dream and create our own reality, or we could live in a nightmare of suffering and drama where we are the always the victim.

Each individual lives in their own ‘dream’ or reality, but we also have a bigger, ‘collective dream’. This is the shared world that we are altogether constantly co-creating and sharing as our agreed upon ‘reality’. This collective dream however, has come to resemble more of a nightmare, as it is mostly ruled by fear.

The personal dreams of humans will vary, but globally it is mostly a nightmare. If we look at human society, we see a place so difficult to live in because it is ruled by fear. Throughout the world we see human suffering, anger, revenge, addictions, violence in the street, and tremendous injustice. It may exist at different levels in different countries around the world, but fear is controlling the outside dream.Don Miguel Ruiz

He continues to state that every single belief that we have ever adopted as our own has been stored there because we made an ‘agreement’ that it was a truth for us.

In this book, Don Miguel Ruiz says that by adopting ‘The Four Agreements‘ within the book that we can radically shift the way we experience life, and start to live as the victor rather than the victim.

The Four Agreements
  1. Be Impeccable With Your Word
  2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
  3. Don’t Make Assumptions
  4. Always Do Your Best

Now you have to read the book to find out more about each one. They may sound super simple, and they are; but reading Don Miguel’s explanation for each one is seriously ah-mazing! He has a way of articulating each idea with such clarity and impeccability! Keeping each idea simple, yet giving you many examples of how to practice these Four Agreements in your daily life!
