If Your Compassion Does Not Include Yourself, It Is Incomplete

Cultivating Love for Ourselves

For many of us, it can feel much easier to love and care for the other people in our lives than it may be to love and care for ourselves. Yet we can’t continue to give out what we don’t already have within ourselves. We can only extend our love out into the world to the extent that we are able to find that love within by truly and fully loving ourselves.

When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath.Svatamarama, Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Through the practice of yoga we are able give our bodies, minds and spirits the love and compassion that they so badly need and deserve. Our yoga practice encourages us to become more introspective and aware of what’s going within ourselves, so that we can feel more emotionally balanced and connected to our hearts.

We can’t give what we don’t have

Taking time for yourself, for your own self-care, and to get clear on what it is that you really want in life, is vitally important in order for us to live our lives to the fullest!

  • Practicing Daily Yoga, Breathwork and Meditation
  • Eating healthy, life-giving foods
  • Drinking lots of Fresh Water daily
  • Getting regular Massage and Bodywork
  • Setting your Goals and Planning your days, weeks and months ahead
  • Practicing affirmations, mantras or intentions to help Align yourself with your highest vibration

Self care also includes caring for, cleaning up and loving ourselves and our environments. Keeping clean and tidy, in our bodies, our homes and our surroundings, can become a self-care ritual, where we can take the time daily to appreciate and love our bodies and our homes as we are bathing, washing dishes, cleaning the house, or tending to the garden, filling our lives and surroundings with love in the process!

Despite the finger-wagging modern etiquette pieces, the obligation to provide your full attention to any one person or thing for a sustained period of time is becoming more difficult to meet. The phone, and the constellation of diversions that live inside it — emails, texts, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Timehop, Google Hangouts, all of which can sprout badges of fire-red notifications demanding to be addressed  are just too compelling.
